| A long-time member of the Northeastern University (NU) faculty and professional staff, Cathy Cogen is currently the director of the Regional Interpreter Education Center at Northeastern University one of six centers comprising the National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers. Her lead projects on behalf of the National Consortium include investigating effective practices in Deaf interpreting, mental healthcare interpreting, and marketing as a response to the interpreter shortage. Cathy was the first director of the Northeastern University American Sign Language Program. Under her leadership, two ASL courses grew to a full program of instruction in the language and culture of the Deaf Community, and her Bachelor's degree proposal laid the groundwork for the current program in ASL/English Interpretation. She also led the early efforts establishing the CIT National Interpreter Education Standards and accreditation process. As a community advocate and organizer in Massachusetts, Cathy has co-led and supported lobbying efforts to further the social service and political goals of the Deaf and Deafblind communities. Cathy holds a BA degree in linguistics from the University of California at Berkeley and a M.Ed. degree in higher educational administration from Northeastern University. She has been a certified interpreter for 30 years. |
