The current board of the
CCIE is comprised of ten individuals representing
six national organizations-ASLTA, AVLIC, CIT, NAD,
NAOBI and RID. The charge of this group has been
to build the infrastructure necessary to establish
the CCIE as an autonomous non-profit entity. This
has included the creation of a new 501 (c) 3 organization,
the development and approval of by-laws, updating
of the policies and procedures manual, the creation
of a 5-year business plan and budget, setting of
accreditation fees, and some initial fundraising
activities. To facilitate this process, the CIT
Board of Directors contracted with the DO IT Center
to provide the management support and oversight
of this collaboration. The management contract with
the DO IT Center was recently renegotiated to continue
until the current work is complete and the CCIE
is fully operational.
One of the final pieces in completing the infrastructure
for the CCIE is the recruitment of thirteen commissioners
to represent various stakeholders in the accreditation
of interpreter education programs. The CCIE members
have been actively involved in recruiting nominations
for commissioners during the past ninety days. Nominations
have been sought to represent interpreter educators
(4), Deaf ASL faculty (2), interpreter practitioners
(2), deaf consumers (1), employers of interpreters
(1), fundraiser or other finance expert (1), academic
administrator (1) and an accreditation expert (1).
The number in ( ) reflects the number of commissioner
positions designated for each stakeholder category.
To date, twenty nominations have been submitted
with more than sufficient representation for all
stakeholder categories except one-that of an accreditation
expert. However, nominations for this category are
expected in the near future, as well as additional
nominations for one other category. Various work
demands have delayed completion of the application
process by several interested individuals and extensions
on the deadline were granted by request. It is anticipated
that the nominations process will be completed by
March 31st. The nominations committee, comprised
of Carolyn Ball (CIT), Denise Smith (AVLIC, Nominations
Chair), Persis Bristol-Dodson (NAOBI), Ellie Savidge
(CIT) and Jona Maiorano (CIT), will then review
the nominations and recommend a slate of thirteen
individuals to the full CCIE board. It is expected
that this process will be complete by April 15th
and the selected commissioners contacted and officially
appointed by May 1st, 2006. At that point, the transition
from the current board to the elected board of commissioners
will begin.
A number of programs are currently in the process
of inquiry and/or application for accreditation
and we look forward to officially beginning the
accreditation process during 2006. It is anticipated
that in accordance with the planned CCIE resources,
approximately 5-6 programs per year could be engaged
in the accreditation process. In the next few weeks,
the fee structure associated with the accreditation
process and the most current revisions to the accreditation
policy and procedures manual will be available online
at the CIT website at
http://www.cit-asl.org/
under the accreditation link. |
