1. What is NAOBI?
NAOBI is the National Alliance of Black Interpreters. It is an organization comprised of African American/Black Sign Language Interpreters. NAOBI was established by a core group of interpreters who felt the need to bring cohesion and support to an underrepresented group of interpreters; to share commonalities, find solutions that would eradicate discrimination from the interpreting field, provide professional training and promote excellence and empowerment among African Americans/Blacks in the profession of sign language interpreting within the context of a multi-cultural, multi-lingual environment.

2. How do I qualify for membership?
The membership categories are listed below:
FULL MEMBER: An active African American/Black interpreter currently providing professional interpreting services on a part-time or full-time basis and receiving compensation for said services.
STUDENT MEMBER: An African American/Black student currently enrolled in an accredited Interpreter Preparation Program (IPP) or Interpreter Training Program (ITP), on a part-time or full -time basis, and is actively taking classes for the completion of a degree in interpreting.
INDIVIDUAL SUPPORTING MEMBER: Any individual who actively supports the mission and goals of NAOBI, Inc.
ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORTING MEMBER: Any organization or business that actively supports the mission and goals of NAOBI, Inc.
* Only members holding Full Membership status on the national level are permitted to vote at NAOBI, Inc.'s organizational/business meetings.

** Other members are strongly encouraged to attend and become familiar with NAOBI, Inc.'s practices and organizational growth and development.

3. How do I become an involved member?
The success and growth of our organization is dependant upon its members' willingness to share, with other African American/Black interpreters, the wonderful history, growth, and development of our organization. Both new and current members should identify a NAOBI committee and become ACTIVELY involved; or, if you notice that an issue affecting our community is not addressed, be proactive. Submit suggestions to one of our many committees and/or recommend that a new committee be formed. Lead the way! Recommend topics for workshops to be held at the national conference to address and/or educate the membership about various issues. Submit articles of interest to be published in the newsletter. There are numerous ways to be an active and integral part of NAOBI, Inc. Your contribution is paramount to the growth of our organization.

4. What is the difference between a National and Local Chapter membership?
National membership provides you with an opportunity to become globally connected with other African American/Black interpreters via our annual conference, workshops, quarterly newsletters, and website.

Local membership provides you with an opportunity to network with other African American/Black interpreters in your area via workshops provided by the local chapter, by quarterly newsletters, and via local chapter information posted on that chapter's website.

Currently, only those who are paid Full Members on the national level have the right to vote at the NAOBI, Inc.'s organizational/business meetings. Additionally, only those paid Full Members on the national level are offered and receive registration discounts for our annual national conferences. Members at the local level may have similar voting rights and discounted opportunities in their chapter. Please feel free to contact your local chapter to find out what types of benefits are offered to its members.

5. What if I don't have a local chapter, what should I do?
Please feel free to contact your regional representative and work with her/him to help establish a local chapter in your area and to keep abreast of events, workshops, and training opportunities occurring near your region.
