Leandra
Williams has been in the field of Sign Language
Interpretation for more years than she wishes to
admit. As an undergraduate student, she was a dual
major whose focus was Pre-Law. She went on to Gallaudet
University and obtained a Master of Arts in Interpretation.
In addition to working with her local chapter of
NAOBI, Inc. (NAOBI-Metro Chicago Chapter), her professional
memberships include: National Registry of Interpreters
for the Deaf (RID), RID-Interpreters and Transliterators
of Color (ITOC), National Black Deaf Advocates (NBDA),
National Association of the Deaf (NAD), Association
of Late-Deafened Adults (ALDA), Illinois Registry
of Interpreters for the Deaf (IRID), Chicagoland
Black Deaf Advocates (CLBDA).
Ms. Williams has actively worked within the profession
serving as one of the RID 2003 Conference Chairpersons;
Founding Member, Secretary, and Vice-Chair of RID-ITOC;
Board Director, Conference Committee Chair, and
Vice-President of IRID; and Assistant Coordinator
for conference interpreter services with NBDA. In
addition, she is a member of the National Council
on Interpreting (NCI) serving at the appointment
of the President of RID. She is also an advisory
member to RSA Region V. And lastly she is a Founding
Member of NAOBI, Inc. (and NAOBI-MCC) and has served
two terms as Vice-President.
Ms. Williams currently resides in Chicago, IL and
works in private practice as a Professional Sign
Language/English Interpreter. She holds national
certifications from both the Registry of Interpreters
for the Deaf (RID) and the National Association
of the Deaf (NAD). Her area of interest is in the
field of research where she is currently collecting
data for a book on the history of African Americans/Blacks
in the field of Sign Language Interpreting. |
